AGM – September 19, 2007

1. Call to Order
President Jim Piché called the meeting to order at 10:30.
2. Recording of members present
73 members registered on the sign-in sheets.
3. Moment of Silence for our departed members and Armed Forces in combat
4. Approval of Agenda
A motion to approve the agenda, as presented, was made by Gerry Céré and seconded by John Knox. Passed.
5. Introduction of Guests and Ottawa Valley Board of Directors
President Jim Piché introduced the following guests:

6. Minutes of last Annual General Meeting
A motion to approve the minutes of the 2006 AGM was made by Marjorie Watts and seconded by Bob Taylor. Passed.
7. Business arising from the Minutes
None.
8 Branch Reports
President’s Report: President Jim Piché’s Annual Report, which was included in the AGM package, included: briefing of the National AGM held in Ottawa; updates on pension splitting; eligible pension income; and status of court challenge to Bill C-78 and affinity programs [Collette Vacations; Alterna Bank]; Regional Meetings concerns re: the proposed new governance model put forward by the National Board; Director changes - Larry Palmer stepped forward to take on Membership, and Larry Gray assumed the position of Treasurer; one donation – to the Canadian Heartland Golf Tournament for $500.00 was made.
Treasurer’s Report: Motion to approve Statement of Accounts, dated 31 Aug. 2007 and showing a balance of $25,041.39 by Larry Palmer, seconded by Ed Rockburne. Passed. *Report also included a note of outstanding liabilities of $3,000.00 to cover all costs of OV AGM.
9. Regional Director’s Report
Craig MacDonald, who has been in this position for only one month, touched on the following: PSHCP renewal for 5 years; pension income splitting; success in getting Ont. Govt. to back off billing PSHCP first – then OHIP; Convention ’07 and the strong role of this Branch re: governance issue; Triennial Convention being changed to Annual (requiring Ntl. Bd. to prioritize Resolutions annually). Activities to be pursued are: pushing for flexibility of current withdrawal structure for RRIFS; broadening membership scope (i.e. including Postal Workers) along with improving marketing and recruitment; increasing research and advocacy expertise at National Office; working at municipal level in Ottawa on Seniors’ issues. He reiterated the need to get involved!
10. Open Time
a)Shoppers Drug Mart Reps (Lisa Walker, Wendy Fife) – clarified that by providing them with a copy of a signed Sun Life form, Shoppers Drug Mart will bill directly; provided examples of Compliance Paks (pill containers) that Shoppers Drug Mart will set up weekly; bi-weekly or monthly - for free; and for diabetics, they offer training, and free disposal of needles.
b) Ontario Senior Games District 9 President (Carol Husband). Carol and her husband handed out info prior to the meeting, and Carol briefly spoke of their introduction to this Association, and what an exhiliarating experience it’s been.
11. Lunch
Prior to returning to the Agenda, Shoppers Drug Mart staff drew winners’names for their donated prizes: gift basket – Jim Piché; gift basket – Shirley Finn; makeover certificate worth $95.00 – Shirley Taylor. Owner Ghada Gabr also announced that 13 Oct. 2007 would be an ‘Appreciation Day’ for fsna members at the Carleton Place location (includes a fundraising BBQ and 20% off any regularly priced item that day)
12. Speaker Presentation: Cardiac Arrest and Public Access Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) – Lanark County Ambulance Service
Rick Warren, Base Manager of Lanark Country Ambulance Service, gave a very informative, and entertaining slide presentation, followed by an actual demonstration of PAD (Public Access Defibrillation). His assessment of PAD – machine is ‘idiot proof’ – it will guide you through each step. He reinforced the need for the patient to be totally clear of all other people prior to using (electric fence syndrome); action at 4 minutes equals a 75% survival rate; and that Ontario has a Good Samaritan Law to cover liability concerns. Basically, STOP – ASSESS – DECIDE WHAT YOU’RE GOING TO DO AND HOW – then ACT.
13. Election of Ottawa Valley Branch Board of Directors
Branch Director Ed Rockburne agreed to run Branch Elections. Current Board Members Jim Piché, Arthur Etkin, Judy Buehler, Joe Zarb, Bill Irwin, Larry Gray and Larry Palmer all agreed to stand for renewal of 2 year terms and were acclaimed.
Upon call for nominations, members Doug Schoular, and Chuck Parent agreed to stand and were duly acclaimed to the Executive for a 2 year term.
14. New Business
There being no new business, 2 more draws were held:
- back scratcher/shoe horn, donated by Mobility Care, Perth – won by Bill Irwin;
- framed Perth picture – won by Shirley Wieler.
15. Adjournment
There being no further business, moved by Larry Gray at 1:50 p.m. and seconded by Helen Céré that meeting be adjourned. Passed.
