  • December 19 2011 - C.D. Howe's argument against federal pensions is flawed and biased
The C.D. Howe Institute released its most recent edition of Pension Papers, “Ottawa’s Pension Gap: The Growing and Under-Reported Cost of Federal Employee Pension Plans,” on 13 December 2011. The paper, written by Alexandre Laurin and William Robson, does not provide an accurate view to Canadians on the state of public sector pensions.

  • September 22 2011 - Computer Repair Scam Report
There have been reports that a computer repair scam operation is currently happening in the Ottawa Valley region. An unsolicited caller may try to convince you that there is something wrong with your computer, and that they can fix it (remotely) at some cost. They may suggest they are representing Microsoft or some other legitimate company. If you believe them, they will ask for details that will give them access to your computer.

Do not give these unsolicited callers any information. It is best just to hang up. If they gain access to your computer they may search your files for personal information, including your financial information.

Even if you believe there may be something wrong with your computer, never allow an unsolicited caller access to it, or provide any personal financial information such as a credit card number. Contact a qualified repair person to determine if repairs are required.

  • August 19 2009 - Stiffer Sentences for White Collar Criminals
The Board of Directors has reviewed an online petition entitled "Stiffer Sentencing for White Collar Criminals" that is available at http://sswcc.epetitions.net/. The petition was initiated because of the lenient sentences that some corporate criminals both in Canada and elsewhere in the world have received. In some cases these well-known crimes have reduced or wiped out the personal savings for many seniors. The Common Front for Retirement Security (CFRS) is supporting this petition, however the originator is not revealed on the site, nor is there a statement of intent on what may be done with
the petition by the originator. Because of this lack of information, the Board of Directors is not formally endorsing the petition, however many Board members personally believe FSNA members should look and decide for themselves if they want to support the initiative. You can read the petition and how to add your name to it at http://sswcc.epetitions.net/ .
